Clean Up Australia Day is Australia's largest community-based environmental event, inspiring millions of Australians to get out, clean up their local environment (parks, beaches, streets), and raise awareness about litter and waste. It encourages communities, schools, and businesses to register clean-up sites, remove rubbish, and promotes reducing waste for a healthier environment,

Key Aspects:

• Community Action: It's a national effort where locals organise clean-ups in their neighbourhoods, parks, waterways, and bushland.
• Litter Reduction: The primary goal is to remove rubbish and educate people on preventing waste from entering the environment.
• Inspiration: Started by Ian Kiernan, who was appalled by ocean pollution, leading to the first "Clean Up Sydney Harbour" and then Clean Up Australia Day.
• Broad Participation: Families, schools, businesses, and community groups all get involved, collecting significant amounts of waste like cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and glass.
• Beyond Just Cleaning: It's about fostering environmental care, promoting recycling, and inspiring long-term waste reduction, with participants sometimes acting as "citizen scientists" by counting items like facemasks.
• How it Works: Individuals or groups register their clean-up site on the official Clean Up Australia website. Local councils often support these events by collecting the gathered waste and providing supplies like bags and gloves.
• When: It's a nationwide movement, with separate days for schools (Friday) and the general public (first Sunday in March)
